YWCA-GCR’s Centennial Building Celebration Continues!

From the desk of Jen Whiston, Director of Development and Marketing, YWCA-GCR.

The YWCA of the Greater Capital Region’s year of our Centennial Building Celebration events is well underway. Over the past couple of months, we have had a lot of exciting programming available to the community.

As part of the Troy BID Troy Night Out events, YWCA-GCR held a Trivia Night hosted by Tara Whittle on Friday, April 27th. The trivia questioned teams on Troy & YWCA history, famous women in history, and more.

Congratulations to the winners of the inaugural Starfish Trivia Trophy, Team Shotrock from the Albany Curling Club. (L to R:  Ed O’Neill, Barbara O’Neill, Jay Stein, Dion Warr, Alena Arthur, and Doug Arthur, with Trivia Host, Tara Whittle and YWCA-GCR Executive Director, Daquetta Jones)

On Friday, May 25, YWCA-GCR hosted the play SRO: Single Room Occupancy written and directed by Michael Kennedy and presented in partnership with Creative Action Unlimited. Set in a single room occupancy for women located in downtown Albany, SRO: Single Room Occupancy follows three residents as they struggle to avoid homelessness, keep the support they receive, and work toward improving their daily lives. Performed by Maghen Ryan, Josie Smith, and Michelle Smith-Carrigan, this production was the recipient of a Community Arts Award as part of the Breathing Lights project in 2016.

All proceeds from these events go to our organization. We encourage each of you to accept the Centennial 100 Challenge. By making a pledge or donation of $100 to our organization you will be a part of helping to ensure that women and women with children will continue to have this building and all of the services and programs offered by YWCA of the Greater Capital Region, as a beacon of hope and positive change for the next 100 years.
